Nirvana rock band was founded in 1987 and disbanded in 1994 upon the death of its leader, Kurt Cobain. Their first album featuring hit “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” achieved mass-market success in the United States and sold over 30 million copies worldwide. Tthe band’s third album, In Utero (1993) with songs like “All Apologies” and “Rape Me,” reached number one on the U.S. album charts. The posthumous release MTV Unplugged in New York (1994) won the Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album in 1996.
In 2014 the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
