Raised in New York (later relocated to Chicago) Bobby Broom started to play guitar at the guitar at age 12. He attended the High School of Music and Art where he played in jazz ensembles. During his early career he played in New York's jazz clubs and in 1977 he appeared at Carnegie Hall to play in concert with Sonny Rollins and special guest Donald Byrd. Around 1978 he enrolled Berklee School of Music and regularly played as guitarist for Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers and Dave Grusin
