In 1973 Carlos Santana, leading guitarist of his own Santana band and John McLaughlin, founding member and leader of jazz rock band The Mahavishnu Orchestra recorded together album "Love Devotion Surrender", intended as a tribute to John Coltrane.
38 years later, both legendary guitarists reunited on July 1, 2011 with Invitation To Illumination concert during Montreux Jazz Festival.
They played most of tracks from from their classic 1973 album showing supreme virtuosity and technique.
Other musicians that appeared on the stage were Tommy Anthony (rhythm guitar), Etienne Mbappe (bass), David K. Mathews (keyboards), Dennis Chambers (drums), Raul Rekow (congas) and Santana's wife Cindy Blackman on drums.
