Rainbow Bridge was an Easy Rider-inspired film produced by Hendrix’s manager Michael Jeffery and filmed on the Hawaiian island of Maui.
Jimi Hendrix, with bandmates Mitch Mitchell (drums) and Billy Cox (bass), was already booked to perform a concert in Honolulu at the H.I.C. Arena on August 1, 1970, and the film’s director, Chuck Wein, desperate to feature Hendrix in some capacity, devised a plan to film a free “color/sound vibratory experiment”.
A free Jimi Hendrix concert led a few hundred curious Maui locals to the Baldwin cattle ranch in Olinda where a makeshift stage was constructed and the audience was arranged by their astrological signs. The performance captured the Jimi Hendrix Experience, playing two full sets against the natural backdrop.
The Blu-ray edition of the movie will include all of the available concert footage from the film shoot.
The film chronicles Hendrix’s 1970 visit to the Hawaiian island, playing on a makeshift stage on the lower slope of the dormant Haleakala volcano.
Collectio featuring Jimi Hendrix In Maui documentary was released November 20, 2020 on Blu-ray with Live In Maui 2CD or 3LP album. The Blu-ray includes the full documentary film plus all the footage from the two afternoon performances captured on July 30, 1970 mixed in both stereo and 5.1 surround sound.
