It is difficult to find a Brazilian guitarist, be it classical or popular musician, who does not have any Joao Pernambuoco music in his repertoire. Pernambuoco is widely considered to be the father of Choro, guitar style characterised by highly virtuosic instrumentation, complex harmonies, quick tempos, musical changes, and improvisations. "Sons de Carrilhões" by Pernambuoco is one of the best examples of Choro music. And Brazilian guitarist Yamandu Costa is possibly the most famous virtuuoso of choro music.
Interesting fact about Joao Pernambuoco is that he was illiterate, which led him to seek help from the famous Heitor Villa-Lobos in writing down his compositions; sadly, some of these were stolen. While Pernambuoco was a noted musician, he didn’t receive credit as a composer until after his death in October 1947.
