This is recording from Eric's "The lady in the balcony Lockdown session". This project is the result of the forced cancellation of Eric’s concerts scheduled for May 2021 at the Royal Albert Hall due to the continued disruption caused by the pandemic.
The mostly acoustic set was envisioned to be like an "Eric Clapton Unplugged II, but three songs are played with electric guitars. It’s one of the most intimate and authentic performances of Eric's entire career, recorded with his longtime bandmates Nathan East (Bass and Vocals), Steve Gadd (Drums) and Chris Stainton (Keyboards).
"River of Tears" was first time recorded very early in the Pilgrim sessions. Eric Clapton believes this song is as good as anything he’s ever done before.
"I realized that the way to save it was to bring it back to talking about me and that maybe I’m an unavailable person. Maybe it’s me that’s unavailable. That whole thing in the song about just drifting from town to town and not really being able to fit in, takes the blame off somebody else and places in on myself.” (From May 1998 Guitar World)
