Paraguay native Berta Rojas ranks among today’s finest classical guitarists. Her exceptional musical artistry and flawless technique allows her successfully compete in the classical guitar world, traditionally dominated by men.
Berta was born in Asuncion, the capitol of Paraguay, September 22, 1966. She started to play guitar when she was seven years old when her eldest brother taught her first guitar chords. As a tennager she has studied with Abel Carlevaro and received a Bachelor of Music degree at the Escuela Universitaria de Musica in Uruguay. Later, she earned a Master’s Degree in Music from Baltimore’s Peabody Conservatory where she studied under Manuel Barrueco.
Her deep connection to the country of Paraguay and Paraguay's music including great composer Agustín Barrios Mangoré is present in every note, every simgle chord she plays.
Berta Rojas captivates audiences and critics on stage at most of prestigious venues around the world, including Carnegie Hall, Rose Hall at the Lincoln Center, the John F. Kennedy Center. She opened the Summit of the First Ladies of the Americas, attended by Hillary Clinton.
Berta has recorded 6 CDs and 1 DVD. Her "Intimate Barrios" album is one of the most important recordings of the great Paraguayan composer. Her DVD "Paraguay according to Agustín Barrios" represents the diversity of Barrios, prolific composer, who wrote over 300 pieces during his lifetime,
The tour with renowned guitarist and composer Carlos Barbosa-Lima culminated with collaboration CD "Alma y Corazón." In 2011 Berta teamed up with Cuban 11-time GRAMMY winner Paquito D'Rivera and toured Latin America.
In result 2012 duet CD "Dia y Medio" is another tribute to small South American nation of Paraguay.
Recent 2013 album "Salsa Roja" is a musical journey that traverses the gorgeous regions of South America including native Paraguay.
Berta is committed to support South American artists and the growth of the classical guitar in Latin America region with particular focus on supporting young performers.
In 2009 she founded the Barrios WorldWideWeb Competition, first online classical guitar competition. She was also artistic director of the Ibero-American Guitar Festival held in Washington DC.
Berta is Paraguay's ambassador of Tourism and a professor of guitar at George Washington Univeristy and the Washington Conservatory of Music in Washington DC.
In February 2014 she leads a guitar master class with students of Michael Partington.
