"What's New" was initially titled "I'm Free" and was composed by Bob Haggart in 1938 when Haggart was a member of Bob Crosby and His Orchestra. It was written with a trumpet solo, to showcase Billy Butterfield's band-mate talent. In 1939 Johnny Burke wrote lyrics for the tune and the song with the new title "What's New" was recorded by Bob Crosby and His Orchestra with vocalist Teddy Grace. The song was also performed by Hal Kemp and His Orchestra and Benny Goodman's orchestra. Dexter Gordon regularly performed it in the 1950s and 1960s. You can find many notable names among musicians who later performed it too, including John Coltrane, Wes Montgomery, Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, Sony Stitt, Linda Ronstadt, Betty Carter and Larry Coryell.
