This was the most often performed and best-known Christmas song and lullaby from the middle of the nineteenth century onwards. Jacint Verdaguer, the most important poet of the literary renaissance, composed his own text for it, which was sung by the orfeons in an arrangement by Antoni Nicolau in the last decade of the nineteenth century. The appeal of its melody has endured to the present day, despite the simplicity of the text.
