It's been 3 years today from the day when Roland Dyens, one of the most important figures in the classical guitar world passed away due to lung cancer (he smoked cigarettes since he was a teenager). He died ten days after his 61st birthday.
Dyens was incredibly prolific writer, composer, arranger and brilliant guitarist. He composed for many different configurations, from solo guitar to multiple guitars, guitar-and-string-quartet, and guitar-and-orchestra.
His arrangement work was (and still is) highly influential. It includes everything from Sor, Villa-Lobos, and Ravel to French pop songs by Piaf and Trenet, and jazz standards by Django Reinhardt and Thelenous Monk. Many of his works have yet to be fully explored. Dyens is also remembered for his teaching prowess, especially in master classes.
The death of Roland Dyens shocked and sadden the classical guitar world. He was way too young to die.
Now we can only admire his amazin arrangements and virtuosity in videos like the one above showing maestro playing own arrangement of Frederic Chopin's Waltz Opus 69 No. 2
