It was written by Michel Legrand for the 1967 French musical comedy filmThe Young Girls of Rochefort.directed by Jacques Louis Demy. Song's lyrics are credited to Jacques Demy. The song was introduced to jazz by American pianist Bill Evans on his studio album, released in 1980 after his death. In 1992 also saxophonist Frank Morgan recorded it in duet with pianist Hank Jones in 1992.
