Al Di Meola became fascinated by Argentinian tango since he met Astor Piazzolla at a jazz festival in Sapporo, Japan, in 1986. They never got to play together, and Piazzolla probably never heard how Di Meola interpret his music. He knew Di Meola from his work with Return to Forever and Chick Corea. Di Meola last saw Piazzolla in Amsterdam, just two weeks before the stroke in August 1990.
"Astor was a great friend. He changed my whole concept of what I think about music and everything else. He’s been a major figure in my life" says Di Meola.
Thanks to Di Meola and tangos by Piazzolla, accordion instrument came into much bigger attention. This is Argentinain musician, Dino Saluzzi who played for most of Piazzolla related albums by Al DI Meola, like World Sinfonia (1990), World Sinfonia II - Heart of The Immigrants (1993) and Di Meola Plays Piazzolla (1996)
